Protecting the Environment
After consideration, I would have thought deeper before making a decision. One of the examples is that I will think of other possibilities and ways of disposing an unwanted item. This is because our actions might seem little and can do much harm to the environment but as time passes by and all our actions are added up together and this might cause chaos in the future. Damaging the environment is not a petty issue. Planet earth as we all live in seems to be the only planet that is capable of supporting human life. Once it is damage beyond repair, it might wipe out our species. In the effort of protecting the environment, we will consider the effect of our actions before making decisions. Will our actions do any good to the environment or will it continue to harm the environment? This is the question that must be thought of when taking actions. As we all know, we do not have centuries to go anymore. Scientist around the globe is already complaining about the effect of global warming and the unstable environment that we all have nowadays. We have only a few more decade to go before we totally wipe out the ice berg at the north and south pole. Once the ice is melted, all sort of extreme and outrages weather will occur. Recycling is a very basic but important action that everyone should adopt now. In the wake of global warming right now, it is important that we recycle. The needs to recycle is base on the fact that our natural resources are diminishing . If we do not recycle, factories will have to process the raw material and this will result in more heat release into the environment. A very basic way to recycle is to separate our rubbish into papers, metal and glass. Others waste such as food can be use to make compose. Besides recycling, we will also reuse thing that can be use again such as food containers and shopping bags. Food containers can be kept and put aside. It can be use to keep food when needed. Shopping bags can also be use to carry things when we go shopping. Using shopping bags will eliminate the needs for plastic bags. Many of the plastic bags that most of the shops offer are non biodegradable. This material will not be eliminated unless burned. Once it is burned, it will release a poisonous gas which will cause air pollution. Open burning is also an important issue relating to the environment. It will cause air pollution and also release great amount of heat and carbon dioxide into the environment. Open burning is really unnecessary for household because if we manage our garbage well and put it in the plastic bags, the rubbish collector will just bring those garbage away. Burning the forest to open new lands is also unacceptable. This action will cause discomfort to many people and if it is not manage well, the fire will spread and unwanted accident might happen. We should all prevent using the air conditioning at home because it will release a type of gas which will destroy the ozone layer. Once the ozone is destroy, people that stay in that area will get skin cancers. To keep our body cool, we should use fan instead. It does not consume that much electricity as air conditioner and it does not harm the environment. We should also drink more cold water or take cool bath to warm our body when the weather is hot. We should also educate our friends and family about ways to protect the environment. If possible, everyone should get educated. If everyone is focusing to protect the environment, many unwanted disasters will be prevented. In the deontological theory point of view, it can be easily seen that it is everyoneââ¬â¢s duty to protect the environment. Everyone must do his part to protect the environment so that the next generations to come will have a better place to live in.

Orhan Pamuk vs. Virginia Woolf
Virginia Woolf vs. Orhan Pamuk Aykut Can TURKMEN Petroleum ââ¬â Gas University of Ploiesti Abstract: The aim of this paper is to compare and indicate the affect of ââ¬Å"stream of consciousnessâ⬠. Moreover, I tried to show the (dis)similarities between these two important writers. In this paper, for Orhan Pamuk, I focused on the novel which is called ââ¬Å"Sessiz Ev (Silent House)â⬠. Key words: stream of consciousness, omniscient point of view, third person narration, impact of the time, livesââ¬â¢ reflections and individuality. The usage of Stream of Consciousness Stream of consciousness was used by these two writers perfectly. In the novel of Virginia Woolf, ââ¬Å"The Wavesâ⬠and in the novel of Orhan Pamuk, ââ¬Å"Sessiz Ev (Silent House)â⬠, there are plenty of examples in these books. For ââ¬Å"Sessiz Evâ⬠, at the beginning of the book a characterââ¬â¢s consciousness, called Recep, is transmitted without details and the descriptions by Orhan Pamuk. Pamuk wanted the readers to have fun and to see the consciousness of a person ironically. As in the essay of Virginia Woolf ââ¬Å"Modern Fictionâ⬠she describes life as an incessant shower of innumerable atoms and also she indicates that a modern writer must record the atoms as they fall upon the mind in which they fall. This thought helps us to explain stream of consciousness. Pamuk shared the same idea with Woolf. Pamuk preferred to give an impression to the reader rather than summarizing what the character see, think and do or reporting from the outside in clear sentences like Virginia Woolf. In ââ¬Å"The Wavesâ⬠, Woolf is trying to give a more realistic picture of psychology than had ever before been presented in fiction. She was the most important writer for the fiction and for the stream of consciousness. Stream of consciousness is the most important technique was used by Woolf to approach her works such as The Waves. The Impact of the Lives & Time in the nove ls The novels are the reflections of the writersââ¬â¢ lives mostly. For these two novels, Sessiz Ev and The Waves, I can say that Woolf and Pamuk wrote their own lives but fiction. Pamuk said that he had written his own life and the characters were his steps on the life. Woolf also reflected her life to her novel, The Waves. She also wrote her experiences with the help of her own characters in the book. While ââ¬Å"The Wavesâ⬠was taking place in one day and the all steps of one day, ââ¬Å"Sessiz Evâ⬠took place in one week. This means that Pamuk used the time undetailed but Woolf used the time so detailed. Woolf used the time like a life and each step of the day is the part of a life. For example, the beginning of the novel is early morning and this time of the day represents the childhood. But Pamuk doesnââ¬â¢t do this he prefers to use the time long. Pamuk uses the time with the clock but Woolf doesnââ¬â¢t use the time as it is. In ââ¬Å"Sessiz Evâ⬠ther e is many examples like ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s ten to elevenâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s nineâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s five past nineâ⬠. In ââ¬Å"The Wavesâ⬠, Woolf doesnââ¬â¢t do as Pamuk does. She prefers to say the time by descriptions rather than saying the time directly. Woolf describes nature at the beginning of each part of the book. They are called as interludes. These interludes help the reader to understand the time and the step of the day and life. She uses the words to say the time like: ââ¬Å"sunriseâ⬠, ââ¬Å"noonâ⬠, ââ¬Å"eveningâ⬠, ââ¬Å"nightâ⬠and ââ¬Å"midnightâ⬠. The individuality is another most important point for Woolf. Woolf uses ââ¬Å"individualâ⬠peculiarly in The Waves. Rhoda claims to ââ¬Å"hate all details of the individual lifeâ⬠and later says, ââ¬Å"I must go through the antics of the individual.I must start when you pluck at me with your children, your poems, your chilblains or whatever it is you do and suffer. But Iââ¬â¢m not deluded. â⬠She showed us her thought about individuality with these sentences. She uses the word ââ¬Å"individualityâ⬠to signify the mundane and trivial concerns of life rather than originality. Woolf persistently identifies her characters all together throughout The Waves in a manner that is consistently collectivized rather than realistic, and the six friends become facets of personalities and visions of the world before and beyond any existence as people.Woolf explains in one letter the charactersââ¬â¢ duty in the book like; ââ¬Å"The six characters were supposed to be one. Iââ¬â¢m getting old myself ââ¬â I shall be fifty next year; and I come to feel more and more how difficult it is to collect oneself into one Virginia; even though the special Virginia in whose body I live for the moment is violently susceptible to all sorts of separate feelings. Therefore, I wanted to give the sense of continuityâ⬠(Letters IV, 39 7) Here, with the help of the letter from Woolf, I can say that the book was totally about herself and her experiences in her life. While Pamuk is telling 1980s in Turkey, he tells plenty of stories based on his own stories. He gives examples from his past and his own familyââ¬â¢s past while writing this book. The Point of View, Narration and Symbol Third person narration is the most used mode in the 20th century. Woolf and Pamuk used the third person narration in these two novels. Because of the affect of stream of consciousness they used omniscient point of view, because the best way to show the conscious was the third person narration. Third person narrators are usually omniscient- stand outside of the events and they appear under the form of narrating voice. The omniscient has unlimited knowledge. Thatââ¬â¢s why they are highly reliable and very significant. They have privilege access to the characterââ¬â¢s inner thoughts and feelings. In these two novels, there are many narrators, five in ââ¬Å"Sessiz Evâ⬠and six in ââ¬Å"The Wavesâ⬠. The writers used this kind of narration to preserve the subjectivity. Subjectivity was the one of the most important point in 20th century. Each character tells their own story and this affects the point of view of the books. A new point of view, which lets each character speak, is one of the most important aspects for the readers. When the readers see that each character says the things about themselves on their own, the readers like it, because this shows the equality and the individuality to them. They take an advantage to criticize the characters and to make empathy. Pamuk wanted the readers to criticize them and to find something in the book belong to them. He gave many examples from his life and he wanted the readers to compare with theirs. This was a good method to impress the readers. The waves are the most important symbol in ââ¬Å"The Wavesâ⬠.When the characters/narrators are children, the fist thing that they hear in the morning is the sound of the waves. From that point the waves became the background noise of their day. Then, they were used as the passage of the time. The Apple Tree, is also a symbol in the book, echoes the apple tree from the Book of Genesis in the Bible, the fruit of which led Adam and Eve to knowledge and expulsion from Eden. Commentary In my opinion, both The Waves and Sessiz Ev are good examples to 20th century. They were so impressive books and well-written books.I expected the same things from the books but they shocked me. For example; I waited the grandmother from Sessiz Ev to die, but she didnââ¬â¢t. In stead of her Nilgun died. Grandmother is totally tradition and narrow minded person. She realised anything and this was so bad situation for me. Her black heart made me angry to her. I think the thing that Orhan Pamuk expected was this. I mean to make the reader comment and criticize the characters. I liked The Waves better than the Ses siz Ev, because it has the all aspects of the modernism. There were some traditions in the book but it was pretty little.Pamuk created a kind of bridge between 20th and the 21st centuries. I found a lot of same things in my life, but I donââ¬â¢t like finding something in the book from my life. Maybe, the descriptions are so important for the writers but this is also a tradition for me. I didnââ¬â¢t like the descriptions part of these two books. For example; I liked the part which the dwarf takes place at the beginning. He goes to cinema. When the movie ends he tells the movie in six lines (in Turkish). Thatââ¬â¢s what I liked in the book, summarizing the event, movie or the life itselfâ⬠¦

Monetary Policy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Monetary Policy - Essay Example The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is group within the Fed that meets several times a year to adjust the interest rates. Lower interest rates will increase demand for products and can stimulate the economy. For example, a decrease in interest rates lowers the cost of borrowing which leads to an increase in investment spending. It also leads families to buy automobiles, houses, and durable goods (Federal Reserve Board). Lowering interest rates is an approach taken when the economy goes into a period of recession. Lower rates may induce banks to lend to businesses and households. This will increase spending and stimulate productive output .It should be noted that the change in interest rates has only a short term effect of returning inflation or employment to its long term objectives (Federal Reserve Board). By setting interest rates, the FOMC is able to indirectly control the money supply. Lower interest rates alter the total of amount of loans, bonds and shares issued. According to the quantity theory of money, as the money supply increases the inflation rate rises ("The Quantity Theory of Money"). Setting the interest rate becomes a task of stimulating economic output while keeping inflation under control. The effects of interest rate changes may take from three months to two tears to show an effect. Chart 1 in

President Obama Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
President Obama - Essay Example The reality of his performance, however, has been subject to serious scrutiny. Barack Obama is the 44th president of the United States. Having a Kenyan father and spending some time in Indonesia, Obama is considered as a representative of the American Story of success (White House, 2011). He is also the winner of the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. He made history in 2008 when he won the U.S. presidential election. But who is Barack Obama, the individual? Answering that question is much more difficult than it seems. Belonging to a family headed by a Kenyan father and his childhood spent in Jakarta definitely separates him from the long line of presidents hailing, almost exclusively, from the native land. More fruitful for understanding who he is and what he is about is the portrait of a highly ambitious politician with the self-assurance that stems from a stellar Ivy League record, a wife to match and early electoral successes. These are the traits that do not, as an understatement, represen t the average African American. Hence his ââ¬ËAfrican Americanismââ¬â¢ is not part of his core identity. He is analogous to any previous or forthcoming American president in all relevant ways. We must, however, agree to acknowledge this accomplishment and consider it a benchmark for years to come. Despite his African American reality, Obama was able to attract scores of people to support him before being the president elect, and even before being the first choice candidate for the democrats. The enormity of his achievement is summarized by the fact that not only is he the first African American president, he is also one of the few presidents to live up to his word post election. Michelle Obama has also been a source of inspiration for many Americans. Not only is she the first African American lady, she is also a philanthropist, activist and ardent supporter of her husbandââ¬â¢s policies. Her contribution is not limited to the advice she gives to her husband on the administr ative front, rather he unwavering support and love for the president acts as a source of peace and serenity. The president often quotes her to be as the source of love and calm in her life. She is not only fulfilling her duties as a first lady, she is also fulfilling her responsibilities as a mother, wife and patron of the family at the fullest. This is what any working man needs, and given the fact that her man is the most important man in the world, she is definitely not disappointing anyone in making life easy for him. Analyzing his reign: The first two years of Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s reign saw the compilation of a substantial amount of policy accomplishment. The major changes and policy initiatives undertaken by his government include the economic stimulus ( meant to correct the mess created by years of non-regulation and poor foresight by previous policy makers), bringing a substantial recovery to the financial system, aiding two of the major auto makers of the United States, th e universal healthcare program, the increasing initiative and reform for financial regulation and significant changes in the foreign policy, especially with respect to Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The foreign policy of Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s office is often compared with that of the President Bushââ¬â¢s reign. The Bush doctrine saw a turn in US foreign policy, marked by full scale militarization and the unilateralism in achieving the objective of defending the US security and its vital interest, irrespective of other countries, and by establishing US hegemony in the world. Obamaââ¬â¢s foreign policy strategy aims at reaffirming US leadership in a changing

Home work - Essay Example aty incorporated more enforcement provisions, there would be lower environmental degradation and environmental clean up would never be a burden to the citizens. Zapatista National Liberation Armyââ¬â¢s point of opposing NAFTA and free trade was grounded on the concept of ââ¬Å"Land and Libertyâ⬠. That is, the rebellion was ecologically motivated. The revolt region, Chiapas, had three distinct ecological zones, threatened by industrialization. With NAFTA, the indigenous people would be affected because of increased tariffs, which the Zapatistas viewed as a death warrant for the native people. The US government pays farmers not to produce portraying the program as environmental protection initiative. However, the program substituted price support programs fro farmers and is clearly a form of income support initiative. This practice should continue as long as there is enough food supply to the US citizens and farmers are actually willing to give up farming. The fourth agricultural revolution might focus on growing food in areas of close proximity to the market to reduce the impact of emission through burning fossil fuels during transportation of farm produce to markets. It is likely to entail utilitarian urban ecology with green roof tops. In early periods, natives of LDCs were ferried to Europe and America, depleting LDCS, especially Africa, of its workforce and pumping slaves in their own systems for development purposes. Also, global economic policies are in such a way that they favor developed nations while they oppress LDCs. However, LDCs are also to be held responsible for their underdevelopment for numerous reasons. First, LDCs are characterized by poor leadership that lacks accountability. Second, LDCs population growth is far much above the rate of economic growth, putting a lot of strain on available resources. Third, LDCs are characterized by political instability, which is an enemy to development progress. Rapid population growth reduces development

Ronald Reagan, Lyndon B. Johnson and Franklin D. Roosevelt - most Essay
Ronald Reagan, Lyndon B. Johnson and Franklin D. Roosevelt - most dominant and active presidents of the United States of America - Essay Example President Roosevelt regarded public welfare considerations to eclipse individual autonomy in importance; however, he prepared to use the influence of the government to force people to act in the public interest. Unlike Roosevelt, we find that Ronald Reagan acknowledged or considered the government as being part of the problem and not the solution in the economic impasse. On the other hand, President Lyndon Johnson was the major proponent of the thought that the government, particularly a big national government, was the best solution to most of the problems of the United States. During the presidency of Johnson, the first debates regarding minimum wage was initiated, being extensively backed by the Equal Opportunities Office. These individuals believed that if the redistribution of income were to be done in an appropriate manner, then a ware rate would actually be a big step (Tim 56-85). Just like Reagan, we find that Johnson also had a dislike for communism and promised to bring it to an end in Vietnam.

Anything free style - Essay Example Taking pictures and video-recording used to be two different jobs but now a digital camera performs a number of functions at the same time. It was quite costly when new but now prices have come down as a number of manufacturers are in the business. So, mostly all families have a digital camera. Purchasing a digital camera is not easy as a wrong decision can result in outdated purchase that has no guarantee of its parts. To save one from this error, one should buy a device which is quite costly than the average market price so that all latest features are there in that digital camera. One should look out for the price, the image resolution, size of the memory card, the LCD display, the interface, and the weight & size of a digital camera while purchasing. One important quality feature of a digital camera is its resolution, which technically is based on the number of pixels. A camera with higher pixels is known as better than lower number of pixels. Before buying a digital camera, it is important to know for what purpose you are buying it. For a big photo, using the zoom function on a small resolution camera will not provide a bigger picture. Zoom function can save money but the quality of picture is not good. It is better to select a better camera with a lesser memory. LCD- display is must to remove unwanted images and perform other functions related with LCD. Other features of digital cameras are creating a slide show, a digital photo album, and presentation on a computer, TV or multimedia projector. You can get images printed without using a computer. One can send images using email via the Internet. This is the most worthy feature of a digital camera. Digital cameras come in the price range of $300 to $9000 but donââ¬â¢t expect many features from a camera of $300. The popular brands selling digital cameras are: Sony, Canon and Nikon. Others include Casio, Fuji, HP, Kodak, Konica, and

Macroeconomics - Industrial Economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Macroeconomics - Industrial Economics - Essay Example Concentration ratios are calculated depending on the largest firmsââ¬â¢ market shares. If 90 percent of industry is produced by four largest firms, then hat indicates an oligopoly and the four firms have a good market share (Curry and George, 1983). At the low end concentration, a zero percent concentration means that there is perfect competition meaning the number of firms is too large that the largest firms have no percentage of the market. On the other hand, 100 percent concentration ratio implies that there is a concentrated oligopoly. It therefore, means, there is monopoly. 0 to 50 percent concentration ratio can be interpreted as a low concentrated industry. In this, oligopoly is at the top while monopolistic competition falls at the bottom. Medium concentration takes a 50 to 80 percent concentration and is considered to be very much oligopolistic. High concentration ranges from 80 to 100 percent concentration (Curry and George, 1983). ... Concentration ratios of eight firms range from 88.5 to 97.4. Concentrations are on the upper end indicating high oligopoly almost coming to a monopolistic market structure. From the data above, considering the concentration ratios, it shows that in the first two years, there is less oligopoly. It then increases in the year 2002 where it is at highest. Then due to high turnover, there are more firms joining the industry which causes the concentration ratios to lower reducing oligopoly. Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) is another measure of market concentration. In calculating it, the market split of each company that is competing in the market is squared, then summing the results. It can range from zero to 10,000. The higher the marketââ¬â¢s concentration, the closer it is to being a monopoly and the less competitive it is (Curry and George, 1983). Considering the investigations conducted, it showed that the market concentration is highest in the year 2002 which is 1577, and it is lowest in year 2000. This indicates that the market was less competitive in the year 2002 than in 2000 which were more competitive. The competition then increases from 2003, goes down in the following year then starts to decline again. Since the marketââ¬â¢s results ranges from 1,000 to 1,800, it can be termed as a moderately concentrated market. We can therefore, conclude that it has some oligopoly. To what extent do the major studios - those named in the CR4, CR6 and CR8 indices - outperform the market? In the economic model, competition among firms that are rivals reduces profits to zero. But competition is imperfect and firms are not price takers. Industry concentration is used to measure rivalry. A high concentration ratio shows most of the
